Kōsen kitei [交戦規定] or rules of engagement
Rules of engagement refer to the laws and rules (legal, civil, moral, and social) issued by a competent authority that delineate when, where, how, and against whom force may be used, and they have implications for what actions one may take on their own authority and what laws and rules may be issued by authorities.
You have the right to apply appropriate levels of force in applying self-defense against violence or threats of violence.
Force used must be minimal necessary under the immediate circumstances and proportional to the threat.
Know, understand and apply appropriate force in self-defense in accordance with laws, civil and legal, of you city, county and state.
Remember, it is highly recommended one make every attempt to avoid situations and environments where possible conflicts and/or violence may occur, make every attempt to evade and escape conflict/violence making any hands-on strategies a last resort in protecting life in making every effort to remain within the self defense square, and in the event one is left no other choice to apply force as mandated herein, i.e., ROE above.
“The Marine Corps taught me the 70% Rule. It says that you take action on any decision when you have 70% confidence in the success of the decision.” - Bo Barron (https://officercandidatesschool.com/2021/12/04/70-solution-the-marine-corps-framework-for-making-battlefield-decisions/)
It is imperative to know and understand that in the majority of situations the person utilizing strategies and tactics of self defense will have little to no intel on their attacker (except in social encounters vs. a predatory encounter) so it is critical to teach, train, study, and understand the local laws and regulations and requirements that will be placed on you if you are forced to apply self-defense methods and methodologies, i.e., your tacti-cool martial prowess, etc.
Remember, even when we’ll within the “self defense SQUARE” you will face and be judged by folks who have no clue as to their perceptions and judgements regardless of the laws, etc and those who are responsible for said laws, etc., meaning you could be judged and convicted in social media, etc. forcing legal and civil ramifications and consequences counter to everything just and right. Step carefully my padawan!
Remember, “Public Rage” can be as deadly as a violent attack!
