Sora [空] no [の] Chawan [茶わん]
(空の茶わん)
“You are like this cup — so full of ideas that nothing more will fit in. Come back to me with an empty cup.” I think of this story often because it reminds us that we need to stay humble, open ourselves to new ideas, and be willing to change our preconceptions.
Bruce Lee sums it up nicely: “Empty your cup so that it may be filled; become devoid to gain totality.”
"Empty your cup" often is attributed to a famous conversation between the scholar Tokusan (also called Te-shan Hsuan-chien, 782-865) and Zen Master Ryutan (Lung-t'an Ch'ung-hsin or Longtan Chongxin, 760-840).
To have an open mind, empty the mind to create a void as vast as the great universe so one can perceive, receive and understand without any preconceived thoughts 💭 to interfere with our ability to understand all things of heaven and earth 🌏.
Even one of great wisdom, learnings and understandings must mokuso to let loose all thoughts, to empty their cup, so it can take in the gifts presented in mastery of all things under heaven and earth 🌎.
