Calming thoughts and emotions
Wabi sabi: mushin (literally means “no heart”), where one is free from attachment; when one has succeeded in calming one’s thoughts and emotions. It allows one to achieve clear unhindered perceptions, to perceive without preconceived notions or judgments.
Mushin is also total absorption in a task where the conscious is quiet and instinctual acts take precedence. This absorption allows the mind and body to work in a free, natural, and uninhibited way.
Mushin along with other somewhat esoteric concepts provide the karate-ka the tools to achieve success in applying skills and methodologies thru the medium of karate and martial arts. Mushin is a tool of the mind, the mind influences the body as the body the mind.
Mokuso and the difficulties along with shedding blood, sweat and tears in the dojo allows us to realize the true nature of reality.
The four tenets of mushin:
- Everything is in flux;
- Nothing is permanent;
- All is transient;
- Perspective is holistic.
Mushin in karate exposes the true vagueness of reality. It promotes an intuitive emotionless based decision making process.
It exposes the wisdom of deaths touch, for nothing seems more important than anything else when the thought of non-existence is brought into the equation.
Mushin allows us to harness the emotive effect of death to add force and power to our actions.
