Most of the martial artists will immediately respond to this by saying, "Muscle Memory, Baby!" Truth being told, "Muscles do NOT have memories!" Musculature responses happen when we properly encode steps and actions into, "Procedural Memory," and that is mind work coupled or accompanied by other stuff we learn, understand, test, and utilize.
It's more appropriately called either, "skilled memory or procedural memory." It does not involve speech or words and it requires sufficient repetition and sufficient experience. It's a "DO" thing, you do it, do it, do it!
The memory is established by physically moving the body. Note: there are other conditions required in order to encode said procedural memory so it is appropriately triggered under legal, social, and moral reasoning.
Procedural, or skilled if you prefer, memory does not require conscious thinking and is a non-declarative memory. Think, instinctual!
It becomes an acquired sense, if you will, of how to trigger and perform a complex pattern of behavior. The development of any skill or habit, involving motor action involving automatic, instinctual, action must be practiced frequently.
WARNING - CRITICAL: Simply repeating a certain behavior DOES NOT result, lead to, in skill.
How, you say?
Break down the skill into its fundamental components or parts accompanied by an UNDERSTANDING of how the parts come together into a coherent and applicable method.
Ensure important/applicable steps or actions are accentuated and the process is sped up thus automated.
- Make an attempt;
- Analyze your results;
- Get input from others;
- Make appropriate changes as needed to achieve the desired results.
- Practice, Practice, Practice!
Remember, feedback is critical, appropriate and relevant feedback, to perfect procedural memory.
Once achieved through practice and experience, and encoded then conscious awareness steps aside leaving an instinctual automation of the skill exists requiring continual refreshing the continual practicing.
