Dachi [立] and Mono [物]
A stance to wide hinders proper alignment, destroying the purpose of balance (Kinkō [均衡]) but obtaining solidity and power at the cost of speed and mobility.
Proper balance and proper stance is achieved by keeping the feet under the body at a medium (natural) distance apart.
Weight balanced over both legs or just slightly to the front/forward leg. Knees loose, not locked.
This promotes a state of positive relaxation, speed, balance and easy movement.
Balance is being able to move one’s center of gravity beyond the base of support, Chase it, and never losing control of it.
It’s best to have balance in motion, mobility is advantageous especially if avoiding the typical singular straight in/straight out method found in competitive programs.
Balance must be maintained and controlled at all times if attacked.
Shizentai dachi [自然体立] natural stance
