Kakutōgi [格闘技]
Notation: as I continue my studies I find notes, writing, help me reach my own understanding of my way of karate, or martial discipline, and the article here is that effort. Mistakes, changes and omissions are mine and mine alone, like (the nature of) water, I seek my place and my nature.
Fighting Measure: the distance you keep in relation to your attacker such that your attacker must lunge at you to hit or kick you, etc.
Standing and facing the attacker, look down to see or measure the distance of his height laid down on the ground coming towards you so that you are one step further away so the attacker MUST move to enter a distance so they can hi, kick, or grab you.
Set your distance like this and move continuously in all directions to maintain that boundary until you are forced to act by escaping or evading of till you have no other choice but to deal directly with the attack.
Take into account your perception of the attackers ability as to agility, speed and intent, etc.
If weapons are involved, your fighting measure will radically change for your actions of safety and security.
In most cases, because your fighting measure requires the attacker to lunge, if you decide to attack (not recommended unless certain criteria exists) you must lunge of creat a tell the attacker will use to take the advantage - just like you so, use your first move one triggered by the attacker’s aggressive lunge of attack.
Setting the fighting (or better a defensive measure) measure is tantamount toward getting into and maintaining the self defense square which deals with the legal systems prosecutory-measure should violence occur.
