Monogoshi [物腰]
conduct; behavior; deportment; facial appearance; mien (air, bearing, or demeanor, as showing character, feeling, etc. [Seikaku 性格]).
The best training and practice and experiences one can gain is by membership in the military services. Mine was and is as a United States Marine (OORAH!). We called it “military bearing.”
Defined as a Marine who will “conduct oneself in a professional manner to bring credit upon oneself and the Marine Corps at all times” - unknown
“One whose Appearance, Conduct, Physical Fitness, Adherence to Marine Core Values. - Exceptional Military Bearing. Personal appearance and professionalism are exemplary. Consistently demonstrates Marine Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment both on and off duty.” - unknown
The following brings a more concise meaning to demeanor or conduct, behavior and mien. An aura that is detectable by others and how the Marines earned titles like, “Devil Dog and Leatherneck,” and have carried that forward to give meaning to the saying, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine!”
“Bearing is the way you conduct and carry yourself. Your manner should reflect alertness, competence, confidence, and control. Bearing bestows a Marine the ability to conduct himself as a leader & a professional that others will respect.” - USMC Leadership Trait
In the world of conflict and violence the manner in which you carry yourself, demeanor, character and mien, etc.,” is and will be a first line of defense by emitting an “aura” or “mien” that tells one who targets others for nefarious deeds to leave you and seek out easier targets.
This bearing, is created and maintained by your beliefs and experiences, both reality based and live, that built a level of confidence, character and personality that provides a psychological boundary, like shielding, that tells others a story about you that tickles their senses saying, “do not mess with this person!”
If you have researched violence professionals, you have heard their stories of their projection of postures and stances and other such body languages, etc., that literally changed the environment and situation toward a less violent outcome. This article explains the concepts involved.
