When one’s defenses trigger fight or flight responses we turn on our senses of hearing and sight to detect the threat before violence has a chance.
Triggering our heads to swivel has other benefits, especially as an act to overcome tunnel vision so you don’t become fixated on what’s directly in front of you in high stress situations. Many an operator has been compromised by dangers on one’s peripheral and rear. Add in tactical breathing methods, combat box breathing, the effects of the adrenal chemical dump are reduced to acceptable levels.
While breathing 😮💨, the operator can then perform relaxation techniques by relaxing facial muscles followed closely by the neck, shoulders (letting them resume a more relaxed state with shoulders dropped), the the chest and arms which promote deeper, slower and rhythmic breathing further enhancing the countering of stress effects triggered by adrenal chemicals of human survival fight-n-flight.
All this assumes you are looking at avoidance, escape and evasion, or the last resort of using your more physical skills to stop grave harm or death.
