Risk Assessment

Kiken [危険] Hyōka [評価]

Do you tend to take risks? Do you contemplate the potential risks in the decisions you make when going places and doing things? In the dojo, do you train to assess your plans when going out, for potential threats or conflicts?

Doing a risk assessment as part of your plans to decide if the venture is worth taking; the risk is how we continually train to avoid conflict and violence.

Look at it as a physical security vulnerability assessment.

“A physical security vulnerability assessment is an evaluation of every aspect of your plans. This evaluation includes listing potential/possible threats as well as recommendations on how best to avoid/protect against said threats depending on whether you follow through with you plan or decide to forgo the plan altogether.”

We all plan our outings: from our favorite grocery store, watering hole and that gathering to listen to our favorite music; so it seems logical we assess our cost-benefit in attending these and other like events.

For instance, going out for dinner in a relatively safe environment and with a clientele that goes to church ⛪️, etc. seems a relatively low risk. But, taking a date out to a rough club with lots of roudy drinking and partying seems a higher risk; where tempers can flare and conflict, drunks, can trigger fights seems a high risk environment- go somewhere else!

It seems reasonable to train in the dojo, and in every day life; to assess the places we go, and the things we do to discover those possibilities that might result in conflict, and or, violence. Risk assessment is one of those concepts we should practice and train daily to avoid conflict and violence.
