Think of the dojo of a micro-world where life is reduced to nature’s original plan for us, the family. What I call dojo-mates or our karate-clan. Then it occurred to me to find a more terse way to say “why I teach” then if the reader wishes, expand.
So, the terse version, “To pass it forward to other interested like-minded persons.”
Now, a more in-depth story of why I teach karate, chi-gong and tai-chi chuan.”
In general, since day one of my military career I gravitated to teaching, instructing and mentoring. As a young, fledgling Marine, most of those who mentored me became the strong influence for me to follow and “pay it forward.”
I became and was trained as a professional instructor by the Marine Corps and that naturally led to martial methods such as Judo and karate 🥋 as well as Tai Chi and its prerequisite, Chi Gong.
I was pretty good in those area’s with earlier experience in an adhoc form as a teen ten as a fellow Marine as I advanced in rank. When I achieved Staff Sergeant and a tour of duty on Okinawa it became apparent by my “karma” that Isshinryu karate would be a life time endeavor and it also fell in with my other profession I would teach and pass on to interested folks my love, passion, understanding and experiences as a karate practitioner.
Maybe this will help understanding a bit, you’ve just finished explaining a new concept. A dojo-mate has this puzzled look on their face so you do some probing. You probe, you explain, you demonstrate, you probe with some questions, you have him or her try to explain it from their perspective, you have them demonstrate while you do the same along side them, you have them mentally and physically go through it while tweaking things then suddenly the dojo-mate gets this huge smile along with some other micro expressions that say, “Ah-Ha!”
Their whole body and soul just suddenly has this light turned on and go with joy off to a space in the dojo where they practice and refine what they have learned like they discovered the secret of life!
Now that is a wonderful experience when a dojo-mate “gets IT!”
Now, that and many other things, feelings and gratifications I get when I teach karate… or just about everything I teach or instruct!
