Ahh 😯, so you never heard of this one! Well, till today neither had I since I coined this when an idea 💡 hit me. It came to me when I realized that many karate practitioners tend to focus exclusively on “perfecting” their karate.
Now, let me clarify what I am attempting to convey. Yes, we should strive to reach our highest potential and in that endeavor we should work hard to achieve “perfection of imperfection.” Think of a state of perfection on our striving, our efforts, and our giving our intent that, “110%” we Marines believe, is that step beyond our best. That best we don’t know we don’t know we have deep down inside our heart 💜, spirit, and body.
You see, to “perfect” any one technique is to achieve stagnation because the concept and achievement of that perfect shuto or Mae-geri is to set it in stone in an “unchanging state of stagnation.”
You see, in wabi sabi we accept that everything changes. We humans will never do the one thing exactly the same way every time. It is humanly impossible because nature, the universe, is in a constant state of flux, in short it changes constantly.
Music, comprised on collected notes that in change will make music, different songs at every change. If we perfect the song then there would be only one song.
True story, a violinist took the stage to perform. As he readies to begin he, and the audience, hear a twang. A string broke. The audience gasps but to their surprise the violinist begins to play flawlessly. He changed by accepting things as they are in that moment and played his music flawlessly and no one detected the slight “change” he instinctively made in his music. If he had perfected it then he would have not proceeded and left the stage to put a new string in and spent time tuning, etc., before returning to the stage. The harmony of the moment would have been lost 😞.
You see, we spend way too much time trying to perfect each note of the song we play called karate 🥋. We need to do better by focusing on the best karate we can achieve so we can change when that one string breaks, so we can keep moving forward and play a different song without hesitation and with the same end game. In karate for self-defense that is putting man down … fast (same in competition too).
This is what I mean by wabi sabi in karate 🥋. Accept the imperfections as something that promotes change for that is ours and nature’s “natural” state of being in each and every “present moment.”
This is how we achieve a state of true mastery by embracing karate no Wabi Sabi!
Postscript: Do NOT just accept the basic definition of wabi sabi from any dictionary, get the book 📖 that explains the art of wabi sabi, it’s philosophical and practical way.
Karate no Wabi Sabi is a primary concept of training, practice and way of life. It is a state of being and state of mind that promotes the very best of one’s karate-do that just happens to promote harmony and serenity in one’s existence.
😇😃
