In my philosophical mind I see the way we wear things a bit different because its roots actually go down to our very species survival. Yes, survival because perceptions go to things like group membership, status, and other things like perception of honor, humility and even attention to details. It speaks like micro-expressions in body language because, also, it is not just appearance but the mental state of that persons character and personality.
Here is a most excellent example to view and pay special attention to his comments about making your bunk in the military. Many, even myself, when first taught how to make a bunk with things like hospital folds and measuring the white sheet space to that of the blanket, etc. because his explanation speaks volumes of one's character, personality and abilities.
This is the only reason why when I see folks in the dojo with uneven ends to the obi, wrinkled and dirty gi or some part of their personal self is not normal, to my perception of normal as in hygiene, I try to understand why, why I was unable to get across to them the importance of the details of dojo-life. It's not a matter of looking good to impress the kata judges, etc., but rather about the self. After all, if we fail to see ourselves then how can we see others for all things of life but especially others we need to deescalate or just avoid.
It is about the fundamental principle of philosophy and why that principle matters in what some see as a physical manifestation of necessary violence to stop violence. Sometimes the most innocuous things speak to our mastery of just about anything.
