One-strike stop/kill

Blog Article/Post Caveat (Read First Please: Click the Link)

It is being written and presented that chinkuchi is a methodology/concept that trains one in karate to stop or kill and adversary with one punch or strike. Never mind that there is absolutely no proof, evidence or fact of either historical or present day proof. It has been stated that the triad of chinkuchi’s concept and benefit of power, force and energy that manifests in the one-strike stop/killing abilities. Here you go…

Mind Control: Subverting by means of psychological tactics an individual's control of his or her mind (thinking, behavior, emotions, or decisions).

Intestinal Fortitude: defined as courage and endurance to go on. Mental toughness, guts or mental toughness that drives one's inner strength both physical and psychological.

Machismo: strong or aggressive masculine pride. Respectively, machismo, is a sociocultural term associated with male and female socialization in Hispanic cultures; it is a set of values, attitudes and beliefs about masculinity.

Chinkuchi Principles
  • Tensing: dynamic tension used to achieve sequential tensions and sequential relaxing.
  • Breathing: dynamic diaphragmatic breathing methods controlling rate and rhythm, etc., to achieve certain results that enhance one's thinking and ability to act. It has nothing to do with the mystical beliefs in chi or ki as an energy that circulates within the human body somehow controlled to achieve certain results to enhance force, power and energy in martial disciplines such as karate from Okinawa.
  • Mind Control: an inappropriate descriptive term to explain ki/chi, inner power or some spiritual aspect of karate.
The triad of chinkuchi as provided is used to explain the concept yet fails to fully and comprehensively explain the physics and biological principles and effects one tries to achieve in its training and practice and application through methodologies, strategies and tactics.

It wants us to believe that through dynamic tensioning, breathing and the proverbial mind control we generate the legendary "one punch" kill, death or stopping power of karate.

The reality of it is that chinkuchi is merely an ancient way to explain certain mental and physical efforts in training and practice to tap into the bodies energy and capabilities as expressed through application of principled based multiple physical/mental methodologies to stop aggression, conflict and its violence when applied against the person.

Such attempts rely on misdirection and human foibles based through biases and beliefs taught through the system and the dojo and finally the sensei. Due to its mystical efforts the science of chinkuchi is left to the imagination and influences of the individual from principles applied from the authorities who teach it without a method to explain the full science behind the art of training, practice and application of the concept.

In theory rather than reality the belief that one can apply a “single technique” that kills in and of itself is ludicrous because the physics and chaos of two or more persons fighting induce to many variables to allow this to occur except in very narrow controlled situations such as blind siding a victim and even then it is rare.

These methods and concepts are based on different times and situations where one is applying the skills against untrained, unskilled and under developed brigands who tend to pick on easy targets when finding that their choice was - incorrect.

Combating a serious, conditioned, well trained and experienced person takes the likelihood of a one strike kill shot out of the running to end an attack. The higher the level of skill and the physical/mental conditioning of the person in regard to the ability to stop or kill with one blow down to “0.” It’s a nice story and its mythical benefits to attitude and confidence is limitless as long as the proper intent is followed.

As to chinkuchi’s importance to the Okinawan’s, it comes down to cultural influences from China and its passing down Chinese boxing. Empty handed skills is, has never and will never be about combating a superior force such as Samurai. All those stories are great stories to hear and they provide us with historical connections to the past but as to reality… well, belief is reality and our reality is the creator of our beliefs so if you want to belief it, have a go but, if you want the reality of violence and self-protection forget about this singular focus on achieve a one-punch/strike stopping/killing skill because as to empty handed fighting if one dies in the chaos of the efforts it will in all likelihood be caused by “gravity” rather than your uber-special killing skills of karate.

Usually, a skilled person who has achieved efficient and effective protection skill can often end an attack by either their ability to avoid or their ability to apply multi-methods usually described as “two to three techniques” applied properly. It is RARE for a professional to end it with one method or technique except in the very rare cases where often it is more about surprise and the targets vulnerability.

Even shooting someone with a firearm is never a guarantee it will stop the attacker because - nine second rule!

Ask yourself, what are the true principles of chinkuchi? Can you answer it with valid, verifiable and factually based answers or are we going to hear more gobbledygook mystical legendary based misdirection of if-ness.
