As you all already know one who teaches and trains in self-protection for self-defense must know and understand the types and differences in regard to the locations where violence happens. In my mind there are two locations of critical concern, the first is the primary location then there is the secondary location. Do you and your students know and understand what it means to be attacked or confronted in a primary location? Do you know and understand what it means to be taken to a secondary location? Do you and your students know what, when, how and where one can be found in a secondary location skipping any primary location making a primary location actually a secondary location?
Can you explain how that changes the dynamics of violence in regard to,
- First, the primary location?
- Second, the secondary location?
- Third, the secondary when it skips past a primary location and why that matters?
- Fourth, what levels and types of force is appropriate, etc., depending on either a primary or secondary or both locations where violence occurs?
- Fifth, when either or locations are types of violence that are social or asocial in nature?
You see, if you are approached in an environment where the predator must act in a way that safeguards their purpose and objective from observation by others or the possibility others may observe and act that may be a primary location where your actions and words will matter a great deal in survival.
If you are found in a secondary location or taken to a secondary location then you will find that your predator has set a proven environment where they are ensured to be protected from discovery where their actions can be taken with impunity where your actions and words will NOT matter to the predatory and your survival is minimal at best and most likely death is expected unless luck and God are on your side - don’t count on that either.
In most cases, if you are being accosted by a criminal in those cases it will be their primary location for doing business and it is often a situation where they minimized the intervention of others hindering their jobs. Like being robbed, if you do what they ask most often they will get their job done and vamoose as long as you don’t let the monkey loose. If they have accosted you and then move to take you away from that primary location then you are going to be taken to a secondary location where all bets are off and if you end up in the E.R. you can count your blessings but remember, to take someone to a secondary location means you are not just a resource but a target for being a target for a “process” such as rape and/or murder. Note: in that instance I would believe rape is the process with an end result of death because this guy ain’t going to get caught as his secondary purpose after completing his nefarious and grave process.
Now, I am not an expert but one who is provided the following information using home invasions as example. Just remember, your home is a secondary location and that makes a home invasion a very serious and dangerous situation so the force levels, etc., will be different from being accosted in a primary location.

Remember, if you teach self-protection for self-defense it is best to provide this teachings but don’t forget that long before you apply any of the martial skills you are being taught that your attitude and demeanor and actions in regard to avoidance, deescalation, escape-n-evasion and finally physical force matter far more than all those tacti-cool techniques and drills because even you you survive that encounter you will have to explain it in your “secondary threat” of the “legal system” when they jump in the fray after your actions in self-protection for self-defense.
A comprehensive and exhaustive presentation of self-protection for self-defense can be found here.
A single source resource is found here. “In the Name of Self-Defense: What it costs. When it's worth it.”
All these sources, the last is my favorite to date, are recommended as sources to create and teach self-protection for self-defense.
In a nutshell - Primary: Dexter attacks target to inject the knock out drug. Relative safety from detection by others. Speed is critical! Secondary: Dexter’s location where target is secured to apply his process of killing. Foolproof secure location with no chance of detection by others. All the time in the world!
