Stoicism, sometimes heard as 'stoic warriors," and other such titles or names. When you hear someone being referred to as a stoic often thoughts travel to a cold, sometimes hard, and emotionless demeanor and that is true to an extent.
It is described as having an endurance of pain and/or hardship without the display of feelings, emotions really, and without complaint. There is also a stoicism, a school of philosophy about virtue, goodness, and knowledge while living in harmony with fate/providence that is nature. There is a certain indifference in the way a stoic person lives life that can be off-putting to many who have no real understanding of stoicism.
A very positive aspect, trait of a stoic person, is the philosophy and lifestyle helps to develop focus and attention while learning to moderate emotions and thus opinions. It results in the production within the person a more tranquil and happy and socially better life.
A person of stoicism is a person who has created/developed and enhanced their system of logic and their view of the natural world. A personality trait of the stoic person is being neither pleased by good events, nor overly displeased by not good events.
To be stoic in philosophy is the assertion that virtue, wisdom, is happiness, or better yet contentment, and one of judgment that is based on behavior, rather than words. It is about not controlling or relying on external events but controlling and relying our ourselves and to act accordingly. These are few of the central teachings of the school of stoic philosophy.
What a stoic person is NOT:
- Stoic people DO give a shit about all things in this world;
- Stoic people DO have emotions especially for what matters most;
- Stoic people ARE the most real people alive.
Another trait of the stoic person is that they are almost always, to some degree, a "introverted person" whose ease of stoicism seems to come naturally due to the natural tendency of people that are introverted. It does NOT mean the trait of stoicism cannot be developed in all of us, it is a bit harder yet doable making the traits of the stoic person a trait worth inhabiting.
Notes: stoicism is a cornerstone to the art of avoidance for self-protection. After all, one of the greatest services is that of being a Marine and Marines tend to be stoic warriors.
