I have always felt that the inscrutability associated with the Japanese to still be intact, mostly. The following youtube video shows what I would want to assume progress, i.e. a little loosening of the stoic demeanor I have often associated with Japanese culture, etc.

Not really a fan of swing music but that was cool! When the Japanese find something they like they end up owning it: technology; cameras; heavy metal music; monster flicks; baseball... and of course, karate.
