"Martial artists who strike objects with increasing intensity (e.g. repeated elbow strikes), display increases in bone density in the striking area. This process is termed cortical remodeling.
In makiwara training which is one method of conditioning the body, i.e. karada-kitae, is the theory that bone remodeling contributes to the conditioning of the bones involved in the conditioning process. Another aspect that is often overlooked is the process of the conditioning is not just the physical application of the body or body parts toward hard objects but also what we contribute to that process through the fuels, etc. we feed the body.
In order for the remodeling to succeed one must contribute to the system calcium which promotes the cells to remodel, if you will allow some latitude. There are other things to consider but the gist is we need more than the effort and mind-set of karada-kitae but also the physiology necessary to achieve greater success in the conditioning.
Both "Wolf's Law" and "Bone Remodeling, i.e. Cortical Remodeling" contribute to the knowledge base necessary to follow a process that will enhance the bodies defenses and abilities, i.e. makiwara, etc.
Consider it a controlled method of forming density and conditioning of the bone structure along with other factors such as the skin, muscles, tendons, and cartilage that form a holistic or whole body conditioning program for martial arts. Look at it as a controlled loading in the body and bones similar to actual fractures that are repaired by the body, etc.
