In many of my postings I have written about keeping techniques simple. The simplicity vs. complexity influences many aspects of training, practicing and applications but one that has risen to my mind today is "speed." In the fundamental principles of martial systems this involves economic motion. It is the elimination of excess and unnecessary movement when applying martial art techniques.
Add in positive relaxation along with other FPofMS such as body alignments, postures, movement, etc. you add to your speed. This will become more critical as you age in the martial arts. My sensei would say he had to be sneakier than young guys but in reality he simply applied all the physics necessary that we call fundamental principles of martial systems to get the most bang for his buck.
I can tell you that at twenty years my senior at the time he was unstoppable yet you could not see what would appear to be blinding speed, he was just there at a time and with the right technique to cause me concern ;-).
