I've survived being hunted by gangs, killers and contract killers
The streets were my home, I hunted in the night and was hunted in turn

Knives - Time and Distance
The adversary who attacks has all the advantages in a fight and if they have surprise as well as your OODA loop going then you had better have trained to break the loop and the freeze at a minimum.
What I took away from it is a greater understanding and wider personal zone where breach of that zone means I had better begin taking appropriate action to protect myself. The distance of the personal safety zone is a minimum of five (5) feet with a maximum of ten (10) feet. Never, ever allow any antagonist or even a stranger get within the five foot zone without taking some action to position yourself for safety.
A most difficult but doable defensive strategy, five to ten feet start to go on the defensive - talk to them to avoid and deescalate, move, position your body and posture in the best defense kamae possible while maintaining an non-aggression posture and demeanor yet maintain a posture and demeanor that speaks to the adversary, "uh-oh, maybe I should rethink my strategy!"
How may scenario's can you think of that would be good to train for timing and distancing? Remember distancing provides time and to act or react you have to have appropriate distance otherwise your brain/mind cannot trigger physical response fast enough - it just can't be done. Once in range or in your zone you had better be ready and moving or you will suffer the consequences.
You have to have control of the distance especially within the five to ten foot safety zone. I tend to get very cautious and move when someone is entering my ten foot range and physically moving in the five foot range unless my spidey sense says otherwise - err on the side of caution at all times.
By distance know when danger approaches; know when you have to take action by proximity and demeanor; know how to get to the target with all your tools according to the distance; know when to hit; know where to hit; know what technique to hit with according to distance and timing for maximum results which incorporates timing, distance, body movement, etc.
