Confidence vs. Competence

Rory Miller speaks of this in his book "Facing Violence." It is worth the time to realize that an instructor must instill competence in their practitioners. The direct result of competence is confidence. Meanwhile it must be understood that no matter how much confidence one has it will not have a direct result of competence. It is like gravity, it is a fundamental principle of life and like gravity if you jump off the plane with a ton of confidence you still land hard if you don't have a competence in jumping out of plane. No competence is tantamount to now parachute.

Capability vs. Capacity

Rory Miller also wrote on these two in the same book. You once again can have a good deal of capacity in any or all area's yet if you a lacking capability you end up spinning your wheels round-n-round-round-n-round-round-n-round. If you gain maximum capability the capacity is moot. Your capability will instill a capacity where your line will be longer than the threats. I have the capacity to purchase all the hand tools I could want. If I do not have the capability then all those tools become paper weights. If I have the capability I can build anything with a hammer, screwdriver, pliers and will.

In the practice of karate-jutsu-do I have competence and capability. This created my confidence and capacity to instruct and apply it in my life. I would rather have a few techniques applied with complete competence and capability in their application where my capacity and competence are built on this foundation. My line will be longer than the threats.

Competence + Capability = Confidence + Capacity or Competence (confidence) + Capability (capacity) "Bend your mind around this one!" ;-)
