I have come across a lot of information, unverifiable unable to validate, lately on the innovativeness of Tatsuo in creating Isshinryu. Other than the Me-gami design which as to the patch was actually the inspiration and creation of one of his first Marine students.
It is beginning to appear that some factually based information along with my theories it would seem that Tatsuo Sensei was not an innovative as we would like to give him credit for in this development and naming of Isshinryu.
Let me step a bit further out on that shaky limb by saying this may be why he "named" the system and has never claimed to have "created" this system. It would be my theory that he was possibly disappointed with the new, sport and education system oriented, system that he wanted to go back to Ti or Te's sources or roots. What he may have done was put back into his system what was taken out earlier in the 1900's by those moving karate toward a more acceptable and palatable system for school children and the economic viability of a more sport oriented systems.
I am not saying all the systems were headed in the path I mention yet there is a greater sport influence even in those perceived or real combative system such as Goju or Uechi.
I am sure there are those out there more knowledgable about karate's history, Okinawan systems of fighting, yet wonder if either can be proven since there are no documents or historical stuff pre-dating late 1800's, i.e. 1880's and later to be generous.
Caveat, this is simply a theory derived from data I have accumulated in my studies to understand the origins, customs, and philosophies of those peoples who created and provided us with Okinawan Martial Systems.
