Discipline (Self-Discipline [Jiseishin 自制心])

Kiritsu [規律]


In the dojo we speak of the discipline, self-discipline, we create, enhance and build yet we never truly define what it means. What follows is my attempt to describe what I feel is martial self-discipline.


Martial Self-DISCIPLINE is:


the quality of being able to behave and work in a controlled way which involves obeying particular rules or standards. 


the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it.


the ability to control yourself and to make yourself work hard or behave in a particular way without needing anyone else to tell you what to do.


Self-discipline is further divided into three more types; active discipline, reactive discipline and proactive discipline.


  • active discipline: involves setting goals, creating strategies, and taking consistent action to achieve them. It's about making conscious choices that align with our aspirations, embracing challenges as stepping stones, and unwaveringly moving forward.
  • reactive discipline: is our response to unexpected setbacks. It's about maintaining composure in the face of adversity, adapting swiftly, and finding opportunities within challenges.
  • proactive discipline: the art of anticipating challenges and preparing for them in advance, aims to create conditions in which issues are less likely to arise, and in which, when they do arise, we have the connections and skills needed to handle them.


I feel this gives us some “actual concepts” to use  much like the bushido code or our personal martial code.
