Kūkan kyōkai [空間境界] spatial boundaries.
Spatial Boundaries are critical to safety, security and survival! Every human, according to perceptions and beliefs, has a minimal distance between self and others where they feel safe and secure while making space necessary to protect and defend should things get hinky.
RESPECT OTHERS SPATIAL BOUNDARIES!
Body language, facial expressions, etc., will tell you if and when others are uncomfortable with your distance and direction. I say this loosely because there are a whole slew of stuff that affects safe spatial distance.
For instance how men and women set their position with others in a conversational mode are different and if someone deliberately or even inadvertently position themselves in the wrong way it can be interpreted as uncomfortable 🥴, even dangerous.
In short, as one professional states, “It depends!” This is a whole huge category of awareness used in safety and security and how we train to trigger appropriate legal responses to these various stimuli.
A starting source is Marc MacYoung’s huge site on “no nonsense self defense” where he teaches us about boundaries. He also has a video series on boundaries to teach us to better understand how to utilize boundaries or how to maintain spatial boundaries for safety and security.
