Self-Esteem: confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect.
Self-Respect: pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity.
In an interpretation of the yin/yang principle of bugei; self-esteem/self-respect are one where equal balanced duality that creates the one is to be enlightened. To be enlightened is to have, hold and believe in oneself regardless of others as having a outlook of oneself that creates harmony and balance in one's life. One's life being that of self as it contributes and creates harmony in the social structure of the social survival dynamics of the human condition.
When we believe wholeheartedly in our self-worth and resulting abilities we develop and have self-respect because we have self-pride, self-confidence, honor and dignity; that is the very cornerstone of our self. Anything less is unacceptable and detrimental to health, well-being and a harmonious life.
Failure is assured once a person expects and misdirects their self to that of the expectations of others. We are not to be subjected to others expectations and it is more appropriate to set our own expectations for our self and not project the same to others in support of our selves.
