First, let me say that even in the very beginning I had issues with numbering the lines. I always felt there should be some sort of continuity without borders and that it, like nature and the universe, should flow to create the dichotomy of the yin/yang principle. Then as my studies proceeded I began to wonder why only the two senses were inferred in the tome, i.e., sight and auditory, because all the senses contribute to our abilities and applied skills. So, to start, I added in tactile because touch is a huge part of applying the martial skills we are taught.
I have not yet decided how to allow for smell and taste to contribute to the goku-i and I believe that ignoring or assuming are dangerous especially when teaching those who in all likelihood have never encountered and dealt with conflicts of a certain nature along with the violence that lies simmering under all conflict of all levels and degrees. (note: while writing this paragraph I appended the two senses…)
Reading the following is my rendition of the ken-po goku-i without the numbering, without separation into individual lines and with all the senses. I know that the numbering has significance in ways never explained by Tatsuo-sensei assumed to come from his other skills as a fortune teller and village advisor. My studies of those ancient writings, taking into consideration the disparity of culture, time and environments toward our modern times, needs and objectives to come up with what follows. I am not taking away from the original, I am simply expanding that set of karate-koans to create something individual and applies to my beliefs, studies and practices.
“A person's heart is the same as Heaven and Earth while the blood circulating is similar to the Sun and Moon yet the manner of drinking and spitting is either soft or hard while a person's unbalance is the same as a weight and the body should be able to change direction at any time as the time to strike is when the opportunity presents itself and both the eyes must see all sides as the ears must listen in all directions while the mind must grasp all the tactile, olfactory and gustation data not seen on all sides and not heard in any direction.” - cejames
Again, as you already know I also contribute a lot more than the obvious meanings behind the old and the individualized goku-i, you can read those thoughts, beliefs and understandings here:
Don't limit yourself to just one meaning even if it is the one your sensei believes in wholeheartedly, it is about how you absorb, modify and create your own way... so to speak - Doah (Homer head slap ;-) ) - cejames
