The characters/ideograms mean "reiki (healing method)." The first character means, "soul; spirit," the second character means, "spirit; mind; air; atmosphere; mood."

Note: it must be understood that my belief in the art of reiki is that it triggers the subject toward self-soothing that helps comfort them and reduce the adverse effects that the mind can trigger in the body making things worse. It is something one can do to help an injured person relax as much as possible and calming the mind so that they can wait for help from qualified and certified emergency persons. This that follows is merely my persona opinion on the subject of reiki. If you believe, it works and that spells out how it works through a process of manipulating the mind.

I first heard of reiki through connections in martial arts. As sensei, as in any physical discipline, we are tasked with teaching the destructive arts, i.e. karate, aikido, etc. but are also tasked, we shall, with learning the healing arts. As sensei we encounter injuries and such often enough that we shall have the ability to at least apply first aid or in this case the healing art of reiki until more practice medical professionals can intervene. (Note: I would not advocate using reiki if someone is injured, leave it to authorized first aid certified by proper authorities or leave it till the emergency folks arrive)

It is considered a spiritual practice developed by Japanese Buddhist and uses what is commonly called palm healing or hands-on-healing as a form of alternative first aid and is classified as an Oriental medicine. By using reiki one believes that they are transferring universal energy in the form or "ki or chi" through the hands to the person injured, etc. It is something that promotes self-healing through a mind-body connection whereby the power of the mind achieves self-healing of the body, etc.

Now, in truth, reiki is a simple mind control method, it is manipulation through various compliance/influence principles to misdirect and manipulate others into believing... it works. Can you heal someone using reiki? No. You can influence, a bit like placebo effects, to heal because the mind is a very powerful healing tool. In the end the best you can hope for is reducing the focus on the injury thereby reducing the psychological effects of the pain and/or discomfort.

The English definition of reiki is that it is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being.

Key here is that we are using compliance/influence principles along with the self-soothing actions using the hands, i.e., like when we rub our facts with our palms, etc., to trigger a self-soothing process in the recipients mind to reduce the effects of the injury through the mind manipulation, i.e., misdirection of the conscious mind away from the injury to something else like misdirection, that triggers our bodies natural inclination toward healing itself. The results wold be a physical and emotional well-being through the act of self-soothing or in this case your hands triggering the natural soothing necessary to human survival.

Remember, this is just my opinion and I do believe that reiki can help an injured person to weather the storm while waiting for proper, clinical, valid, authorized and certified medical attention from said professionals.
