The characters/ideograms translate to English as "Garden Training Place." Backyard Dojo [奥庭道場] translates into English as "inner garden; back yard." Rokotsu jōkū oniwa dōjō [露骨上空奥庭道場] is the open sky backyard dojo or training hall or training place.
What is a backyard dojo (also referred to as a garden dojo)? In the early years of the 20th century after WWII most of the prominent dojo of karate were at the homes of those very karate master’s because the ramifications and effects of the World War made times rough for the Okinawan natives whose poverty existed until the occupation started to help generate jobs and a stable economy.
In short, the dojo were either in a room of the house or just outside in the yard. You might say they emerge “open sky backyard dojo!”
Many of the now historical photos of American servicemen were shot in these dojo and are the only recorded one’s showing the open-sky backyard garden dojo.
As karate’s practice gained popularity with those early pioneers of karate the transformation of the open-sky backyard garden dojo received walls and roofs to establish dojo or the official “training hall.”
