Blog Article/Post Caveat (Read First Please: Click the Link)
Lets get the caveat’s out of the way ‘because’ it is important to understand that when I state scientifically/somewhat is due to the source of the article that used the term to help us believe what is to follow herein from me, myself and I as the author of ‘this article’.
The concept of chi/ki is very old, it has been around for at least a thousand years and you find it spread throughout the ancient Chinese classics such as the I Ching and the Tao Te Ching. It is from the proverbial scientific endeavor to understand how, why and what it is that works in the art of acupuncture. It is from this effort that an understanding of chi/ki is derived.
There is this something called ‘interstitium’ (interstitium [plural interstitia] [medicine] An interstitial space within a tissue or organ. [medicine] Specifically the tissue between the pulmonary alveoli and the bloodstream. [philosophy] A state between systems or spaces.) used that is like our skin covering and running through our bodies. It is believed to be fluid filled and as we already know fluids tend to conduct well. In acupuncture it is this interstitium that runs across lines in the body referred to as meridian lines.
I quote, “This invisible web of energy connects all the different parts of the body in order to grow, heal and function effectively. And it is through these rich fluid filled spaces, that cells communicate, transport information.”
It is this web of energy that is felt to be the concept explained by the term chi or ki in Japanese. It is also these meridian lines and web of energy that convey the chi/ki throughout our bodies. It is a free conducive path that chi/ki must follow to permeate the entire body, i.e., carry the life energy to every cell via the fluid fill spaces, etc.
Another quote that may explain the concepts of chi/ki, “The lymphatic system (comprised of the fluid which travels through these lines), has lymph nodes at the end of each fascial compartment. These are used to filter this lymph fluid. Acupuncture points are found at this juncture too. The concentration of rich lymph which easily conducts the electrical charge and the highly charged energy centers, means manipulation of points here is more powerful than other places in the body. The way the cells direct and communicate with each other is via chemical signals. Modern science calls these signaling molecules morphogens, and these morphogens act directly on cells to produce specific cellular response. These signals require or include a spark of energy or charge which allows these signals to move along the channels and communicate with other cells and parts of the body.”
Then the final explanation of how acupuncture works is a tell, if accurate and factual and scientifically provable, to what chi/ki is and how it works in the body, “This electrical charge starts at conception and an absence of this energy means death. It’s basically the spark of life. In Chinese Medicine, we call this spark Qi (pronounced Chee). It is essentially electricity with biological information or smart energy.”
Then the question is asked in martial arts, “How does this work with energy and power and force of the martial arts applications and methodologies?” Simple the answer is really, it means that through both mental and physical actions along with the fuels we consume along with the life fluid of water, hydration, we create a body that is healthy, fit, able and at a proverbial level of ability and efficiency that we can manifest movement such that when properly applied in a principled based effort results in maximum energy, force and power.
Chi/ki is finite and when we achieve maximum efficiency in that flow of energy then we can make proper use of our bodies and minds to achieve things and this is how it works in any endeavor including the martial disciplines.
