Kansatsu-ryoku [観察力] translated into English as, “powers of observation.” It is exampled as, “kare ha kansatsu-ryoku ga surudoe” or “He has an acute sense of observation.”
Our powers of observation today must be as sensitive as possible simply because today's social construct is and has exposed the every day citizen to potential violences not seen in a long time. I say this as a part of my perspective and perception as a knowledgable, limited experience too, person on self-protection. Take a read on the link provided and you can, as you already have, visualize just how easy it is to be the one targeted as this young fellow was:
I am not advocating that we live our lives on "HIGH ALERT" and yet I AM saying that we must stop ignoring the fact that humans are violent, start learning about things like violence and how that occurs and finally learning about the what, when, where and especially HOW violence and conflict happen BECAUSE as one professional, supported by the teachings of other professionals, states - there are road signs along the path leading to conflict and violence one can perceive if one knows what to perceive.
Our powers of observation are a hint BECAUSE without that knowledge and understanding even the lizard in our brain provided by nature for survival will not trigger our freeze-flight-fight response or at some level result in a FREEZE rather than an appropriate action/reaction ability so that the FFF can do its job.
We have to create a skill-set that teaches us to observe both consciously and instinctually (unconscious mind) all that goes on around our environment regardless of our location in the world so that we may better avoid or escape-evade that which exposes us to conflicts that, especially, lead to violence. Regardless of the level of that conflict; the level of force; the level of violence and many other concepts and factors.
You are already asking me, "powers of observation, what about awareness?" You cannot have awareness without your powers of observation and this goes back to the concept by Col. Boyd, the OODA BECAUSE a critical part of the loop is our observation and orient skills for without those the decisions cannot be made because there is no data to make that decision from and the actions cannot be learned and applied because one ignorant to conflict and violence or one who refuses to acknowledge our human nature and because one who does not know and does not know they don't know cannot take charge and act accordingly to prepare for the possibility, often eventuality, of conflict and violence.
There is a reason why Col. Boyd, when creating his loop, used observation as the first step in the loop to achieve all actions necessary in life to survive, you cannot orient, decide or act appropriately with out appropriate training and practice and knowledge and understanding that must be created into the skill-set you need.
It is why I would be very excited about having such training/lessons in our educational systems BECAUSE as hard and dangerous and uncomfortable such topics and training are, they are critical to one’s ability to deal with it even in the remotest chance one may be exposed to it.
In the past we have spent a good deal of time and effort on the development of our awareness, or we at least have given it a lot of lip-service, but to be aware one must have the data and ability to process said data in our skill-set to recognize our observations of our environment so we may decide, consciously or instinctually (unconsciously) and therefore choose the appropriate and effective actions to get-r-done.
Thanks!
