PERSPECTIVE: Pattern-no-pattern [型-否-型]

Comfort Zone: that space, if you will, that feels really good; feels solid; feels strong; feels skillful; feels accomplished puts us all in the very comfortable space that fosters safety, security and ability especially in martial arts BECAUSE that discipline as you already know and believe is about conflict resolution through physical intervention against criminal violence.

The "hardest road to travel" is the one single lane that is smooth, straight and instills comfort BECAUSE it is that thing we learn, learn to know, and learn to understand. Life is not really a smooth road BECAUSE life tends to take us on side roads, sometimes off the road to the edge and even into the brush, bramble and obstacle strewn bumpy uneven dangerous off-road experience(s).

Pattern-no-pattern is a concept whereby one enters the dojo; leans the fundamentals and methodologies through the strict adherence to the patterns, rhythms and cadences that come from basics, kata and pre-arranged drills. It sets the cement into the foundation and then through a repetitive patterned practice it sets and cures a solid foundation that is there for your entire life.

To take the smooth and straight and comfort of the lane we begin to perceive the dangers and obstacles that reside just off to each side of OUR lane for our lane is always different from others lane... that presents a means to diverge from the pattern, rhythm and comfort of that lane pattern, it is a wake up call that there is something bigger, dangerous and predatory both in reality and by nature ready to take advantage if we stray - BUT - stray we must, at least in training and practice, if we intend to deal with it appropriately.

Here lies the no-pattern of the pattern where we diverge from the norm and the comfort and the false knowledge of the efficient and effectiveness we perceive in the pattern. It is only through the no-pattern within our pattern that we can create the methods necessary for the chaos and the paradigms of others who would do us harm. Here lies the truth to one persons pattern differences to your patterns providing the motivation to enter the stranger, difficult and uncomforted of the no-pattern. Like yin/yang, pattern-no-pattern provides a balance of reality based stress oriented training necessary to deal with a variety of natural human conflicts we run into every single day and that provides conceptual triggers that allow us to flip a switch to a more robust effort to avoid or escape-evade or deescalate before resorting to the last resort of physical damage control efforts.
