P&R are critically important to anyone who has to protect/defend themselves and/or others in violence, and it is vital information for those who judge your actions in the aftermath both in and out of the legal system. What is perception and reaction time, perception time is that time it takes you to observer and orient or register that you are encountering a threat to your personal safety Reaction time is that time span it takes your mind to leap from observation and orientation to make the decision then act on that decision based on the observation and orientation process. Notice anything familiar in this definition?
The short answer is, OODA; and that is Colonel Boyd's concept of OODA loop, i.e., observe and orient and decide and act. Perception and Reaction is a terse way to describe this concept in violent situations and is extracted from the reference at the end of this article.
It boils down to how well trained you are and how well you understand aggression, violence and criminal behaviors with emphasis on handling the legal system and the legal, moral and social ramifications of an encounter that could not be avoided.
There are several sources of how the law and the legal system view self-defense law and the one I extracted the concept referred to as perception and reaction come from the reference given below. It is one of those forgotten and often ignored aspects of learning, understanding and applying self-protective measures against a violent attack while leaving room so one can avoid or survive the legal aftermath.
It is important with all legal-like materials and references to be familiar and to use that to create a solid syllabus and criteria for your self-defense lessons, courses and teachings before you have to use your combat-like martial mystical powers of martial arts to defend and protect yourself, family and others and part of that syllabus and lesson planning is to consult professional legal experts because as you already know and you can not just imagine, you can visualize, just how convoluted and mysterious the legal system and its members are if you have to navigate that typhoon affected seas of legal ramifications.
