Concepts for Training and Practice Toward Understanding

How do concepts fit in with karate and martial disciplines. Isn’t it a learning thing? Isn’t it a theorized process that produces not only old but new concepts to manifest into a intention toward a goal? Isn’t the goal in the study of such things paramount to learning and understanding then to apply it mentally and/or physically in the real world? How are concepts created, developed, vetted and implemented?

To build a purely mental concept, you need another secret ingredient: WORDS. Words form a concept, when one speaks with intent to communicate. Spoken words give the brain access to information that can’t be found by observing the world and resides only in the minds of other people, mainly mental similarities: goals, intentions, preferences. Words allow humans to begin goal-based concepts, including emotional concepts.

People can more easily learn a goal-based-concept, given a word, than a concept defined by physical similarity without a word. Words encourage people to search for similarities beyond the physical, similarities that act like a mental glue for concepts

People accumulate concepts from experience(s) that form our conceptual system and all are anchored by the words that name those concepts. Even in variations it is the words that hold concepts together

Once an initial concept is encoded, other factors besides words then become important to our development of a conceptual system. A concept has a cause that precedes it; then their is the middle, the goal itself that is happening now. Then an end, the consequence of the goal, which happens later. The instance of a concept helps make sense of a longer continuous stream of sensory input, dividing them into distinct events.

Concepts: an abstract idea; a general notion; a plan or intention; a conception; an idea or invention to help understand a process or resource. an idea or mental picture of a group or class of objects formed by combining all their aspects. A process or resource produced as an experimental model to test the viability of new process or resource feature(s).

To reach beyond the moon, to reach toward the stars and to reach even further beyond what we know, what we don’t know and what we don’t yet know we don’t know is to reach to the very galaxies that are beyond human capabilities to see often hypothesized as concepts. Otherwise, are we not then chained to the old with no chance of change and growth causing stagnation?

Sooner or later this becomes apparent to the practitioner, you can see this concept, can you not? Can you imagine when your mind is set free the vastness of what is possible suddenly appears as you travel the road, the path, or the Way? What happens when you let go is the freedom to create, evolve and master the discipline, try to resist the temptation to remain comfortable…become uncomfortable to achieve mastery of the martial disciplines!
