Aggression is defined as:
- hostile or violent behavior or attitudes toward another;
- readiness to attack or confront;
- the action or an act of attacking without provocation;
- forceful and sometimes overly assertive pursuit of one's aims and interests;
- Aggression is overt, often harmful, social interaction with the intention of inflicting damage or other unpleasantness upon another individual;
- Human aggression can be classified into direct and indirect aggression;
- Direct aggression is characterized by physical or verbal behavior intended to cause harm to someone;
- Indirect aggression is characterized by a behavior intended to harm social relations of an individual or a group;
- expressed physically, or communicated verbally or non-verbally;
- Including anti-predator aggression, defensive aggression (fear-induced), predatory aggression, dominance aggression, inter-male aggression, resident-intruder aggression, maternal aggression, species-specific aggression, sex-related aggression, territorial aggression, isolation-induced aggression, irritable aggression, and brain-stimulation-induced aggression.
Not inclusive of all forms, kinds, or definitions of the term but enough to convey its critical importance one, especially in martial arts and karate self-fense, must understand it in order to somewhat train to control it in a more positive way. Aggression, as with its associated anger, has both positive adaptive benefits or negative effects.
Anger and/or aggressive behavior does have its place in human social interactions but where it is not acceptable must be dictated by educated, informed and an innate understanding of its place and use where one learns socially accepted implicit and explicit rules, regs and laws toward the survival of the species, human beings in a social collective group dynamic.
Where we lose site of its necessities in social dynamics is its perception as just one thing, a bad thing that results in grave harm or death. We see how it is portrayed in movies and other entertainment media venues yet fail to recognize, condition and teach coping skills on how to use it when it is needed and how to avoid it when its productivity is not good.
We also fail to understand the gradients of aggression or anger as well as all the other emotions humans have, use and endure. It is called emotional maturity couples with adequate socially required coping skills for individuals, families, and other groups from neighbors to higher level social groups that vary from work related groups to the social fabric of the very nation in which we live.
An aggressive drive to succeed tempered with a moral enlightened objective seems beneficial. It is how we humans innovate and evolve while a predatory process and/or resource effort in a criminal sense is definitely not beneficial - to anyone or any group except criminal. Anger is the fight or flight survival kind of thing that when trained and conditioned properly becomes another form of beneficial drive that makes humans, human.
These distinctions seem to have been suppressed and smothered as if they are this evil unacceptable trait of humans to be driven out without mercy or the consideration that such things take time, must not be forced and must be conditioned, monitored and massaged toward an evolutionary change humans desire while not exposed to the being forced modern effort. This is the very cornerstone of training in humans in ever discipline since the moment we became sentient. It is what humans relied and depended on over centuries of cooperation and adaptation.
If aggression were truly an unnecessary human trait it seems logical that the evolutionary process over thousands of years would have changed our brains to remove those aspects and genes and conditions that allow aggression and anger along with all those other emotions because it would no longer be required for evolutionary reasons and survival.
