Resistance to Change

“Resistance to change is a survival characteristic, but in its extreme form, it is poisonous - and suicidal.” Zen Saying

Ahhh, the final piece of the puzzle falls into place (not really final but hey, attention getter) and it is about survival once again. Our human survival characteristics, i.e., in this case change, are those necessary characteristics that ensure our species survival in a chaotic, dangerous and challenging world in which we live. It explains why we resist change because instinctively our minds pull up what worked in the past in surviving so we tend to rely on that experience to continue to, “Survive!”

After all, any change could result in grave bodily harm or death, both very real obstacles to our survival. So, what is a body to do if circumstances require change to survive? We have to take a look at what we do from another perspective, one of modifications rather than full-fledged all out change. In short, change within the system rather than eliminating and creating a whole new system.

Many times the required survival changes are not changes of the system but changes of certain out-dated characteristics of the system in order for it to evolve and remain effective regardless of strategies, tactics and goals. Dogmatic adherence to certain techniques over methodologies means certain death and destruction.

Resistance is Futile, so said a fictional story and yet it still bears the fruit of reality in it when I use it today. We have to avoid resistance for such things lead to stresses and their effects all obstacles to positive relaxation that allows our energies to flow with minimal resistance. We must make s shift in our perceptions and perspectives in regard to change and simply allow for modifications, necessary survival oriented modifications.

Nature gave us certain survival characteristics we often incorrectly refer to as instincts. We don’t want to change that as we humans cannot understand their use and necessity to species survival but we can embrace our innate ability to modify and append certain characteristics and traits to those very instincts so they have meaning, efficiency and productive applications. To remove or change that which is a part of our very DNA is impossible and counter-productive but to make modifications layered on top of and append to such things is how our species survives and has survived since we crawled out of the muck and mire of early Earth.

Evolution is about change through modifications of our instincts until they are adequate for survival in the times, environment and circumstances of human existence.
