If You're Still Breathing

Then you keep fighting! A meme that carries more meaning than appears on the surface reading. We in the martial arts communities all know the importance of breathing for a wide spectrum of reasons including just keeping alive and we have all kinds of psychological reasons to practice appropriate breathing methods but one mental-state of mind that may not be as apparent is the mind-state/mind-set psychological one, i.e., if we are under attack and we are still breathing then we don’t give up, we continue to fight for our lives.

Now, that last sentence is not a stand alone one but simply a single emphasis that no matter what is happening, no matter how you feel, no matter how your body feels and no matter how your mind may be trying to tell you to just give up, don’t. This is an extreme example to get a point across.

Where many can mistakenly believe it has a narrow meaning is the term, "Fighting." Narrow meaning physical fighting resulting in bodily harm. There are other perspectives and perceptions of fighting like the person in a Hospital fighting for their life because of a major medical issue. The person who comes across a major accident who does seemingly extraordinary things like a woman who literally picks up a car off of her child. Both her and the child are fighting for their very lives.

The intestinal fortitude you create along with an attitude that says, “Until I stop breathing, until my heart ceases and until they lay me in the ground I will keep fighting!” Fighting to avoid violence and conflict; fighting to articulate and deescalate to avoid violence and conflict; fighting to see and take a way toward escaping and evading an attacker and/or situation that is dangerous; fighting to stop the damage; fighting to remain within the self-defense square and so many other fights we use to survive.

If you are breathing; don’t quit, keep fighting, never quit as long as you are breathing!
