Integration is a process by which we first separate then link together into a working whole. It is best seen by the description of the “shu-ha-ri” process where they are at first separate and distinct training then as one progresses all three are linked together into a working whole. The principles of shin-gi-tai also work on the principle of integration.

The integration of karate practices, principles and methodologies are critical for the processes of creativity that often emerges when our left and right brains, our minds, function together as one. This is the process of integration in karate and martial arts through the integration of shu-ha-ri as well as shin-gi-tai and other concepts of karate and martial arts training, practice and application. It is also critical to the study and practice of principled based defense application of multiple methodologies. All taught and trained separate and distinct till that level where integration is triggered bringing the separate atomistic into the one wholehearted whole.

Failing to recognize and allow for integration karate-ka and martial artists are mired in behavioral ruts or grooves dug deep into the brain and mind-state. It is integration that allows practitioners to become more flexible and fee; to remove the rigidity of dogmatic adherence to static types of training and practices so that one does not become stuck in dull, boring and blinded repetitive practices without content, intent and meaning. It allows us to achieve explosive and unpredictable actions and thoughts all conducive to proper application in conflict and violent situations.

This integrated focus allow us to also train the mind, the bran, so that we literally integrate the brain/mind into the body and spirit moving toward resilience and well-being.

Integration: Tougou [統合] The characters/ideograms mean, “Integration; unification; synthesis; integrated; built-in.” The first character means, “Overall; relationship; ruling; governing,” the second character means, “fit; suit; join.”
