I would refer you to the site, no nonsense self defense, by Marc MacYoung. In his article on the effectiveness of karate and martial arts toward self-defense is - enlightening to say the least. In that article he mentions that for self-defense you need three things: First is the knowledge and understanding of crime; Second is a solid security model to live by; and Third, is to self-assess behavior and remove high-risk behaviors. Seems pretty simple but since it speaks to our very human natures, not so simple after all.
Crime, this is about all sorts of things from social to asocial conflicts and violence. It is an understanding of what is out there and how it may or may not affect you and your understanding of it so that when you find, create and implement the other two things for self-defense, you create and implement an appropriate model to implement.
Security, this is complex and takes a great deal of effort to assess and determine your security needs for you personally, your home, and work/social life. Once you develop a security model you implement it and live it and update it and so on.
High-Risk Behavior, this requires you to look hard and long at yourself, your mind-states and your mind-set along with things like attitude, understanding and acceptance of things that may go against the monkey chatter of our reactive inter-dimensional mind-state.
His article goes into more detail and it also links specific topics to other pages that go into greater detail. It is a worthwhile site to determine the value of your karate and martial arts toward effective and appropriate self-defense.
