“Karate Goshin’yo.”

The characters/ideograms mean [空手護身用] means, “(Google translated) karate for self-defense.” The first two characters mean, “Empty hand; karate.” The third to fifth characters mean, “(for) self-defense; (for) self-protection.” All five characters mean, “Empty hand for self-defense.” The first character means, “Empty; sky; void; vacant; vacuum,” the second character means, “hand,” the third character means, “protect; safeguard,” the fourth character means, “somebody; person,” the fifth character means, “employ; use; utilize; service; business.” 

After some time studying and considering terms to describe a particular form of karate and martial arts practice I came to the conclusion that karate for self-defense as the best, i.e., in Japanese - karate goshin-yo. What I study, practice and often write about is karate goshin’yo or karate for self-defense. In my search for truth and accuracy I just had to differentiate what it is I am attempting over what most assume is true about karate and martial arts. 

As a fledgling writer I have to consider what I write toward relevance and accuracy to convey the true meaning I intend otherwise it is just a lousy attempt to write. I turned my critical eye toward my own work and have come to change a lot of the way I explain and story tell.
