The Importance of Adrenal Stress Condition Training

Caveat: This article is mine and mine alone. Please make note that this article/post is my personal analysis of the subject and the information used was chosen or picked by me. It is not an analysis piece because it lacks complete and comprehensive research, it was not adequately and completely investigated and it is not balanced, i.e., it is my personal view without the views of others including subject experts, etc. Look at this as “Infotainment rather then expert research.” This is an opinion/editorial article/post meant to persuade the reader to think, decide and accept or reject my premise. It is an attempt to cause change or reinforce attitudes, beliefs and values as they apply to martial arts and/or self-defense. It is merely a commentary on the subject in the particular article presented.

The book by Peyton Quinn of RMCAT has a lot to tell martial artists regarding self-defense. As I study his material I come across many hints as to its importance yet none so much as the following. 

“Once a person has learned to execute a technique with full power under adrenal stress, adrenal stress itself is the cue that elicits that motor skill. That motor skill tends to be executed in the same fashion as it was learned during the adrenal stress training scenarios. … In a traditional dojo the only full contact striking that is done (if any) is on a heavy bag, makiwara, or air shield held by a training partner without the benefit of the adrenal stress conditions. …” - Peyton Quinn, Real Fighting Scenario-based Training

What this tells me is if you really want to have your martial arts skills available in a hight adrenal stress induced scenario with all the attack and chemical dump causes you must have this type of training available. If not, then the leap you will have to make if attacked will be a very large one and maybe/maybe-not will your martial arts training be there for you or any appropriate response for that matter. Think freeze (OO bounce, etc.)

Martial arts doesn’t need it, of course, unless they also teach “Self-Defense.” If self-defense is any part of martial arts then I can only say that this training should be a critical part of the overall SD program. This is just so you can act with the appropriate force and power, etc., to survive let alone all the other aspects of self-defense you will encounter be it medical, legal and/or psychological - and so on.
