When I think of experts in a narrow sense of martial arts it makes me think of someone who has achieved a great deal in their practice, teaching and application of the underlying concepts that support the complete ideology of martial way. In general an expert in any discipline is subjective. It has gone so far as to be classified as low, in martial arts, as a sho-dan or fledgling black belt all the way up to the red belted so-called master, grand master or great grandmaster (all titles created in the west).
An expert in the martial arts have an ability or have developed the ability to detect cues, patterns, and trends in what they perceive through the senses, i.e. sight, touch and feel being the dominant sense medium. They have achieved, in an instant from experience, training and practice, an intuitive sense to see themselves what is required and don't rely on others interpretations of things.
An expert has an instinct to seek out relevant data from the millions of sensory input received every moment through sight, touch and sounds. They can construct on the fly a story, if you will, of events as they unfold and then decide appropriate actions as a result. They are adaptable, they feel changes instinctively as data is processed by their mind as they learn more about any given situation in the moment.
An expert takes an active stance on everything. They actively search, actively build mental models and actively adapt. Perceptions of others are more data that are filtered by the expert to extract the wheat from the chaff. It is what builds their own understanding of what is happening in the world that surrounds them.
An expert uses data and active intuitive effort to find answers. An expert has a sense of things that provide a model of calm and a knowing that is not boasted of but expressed in every day actions and words - in the very essence that seems to project confidence, ability and efficiency. Experts move in perfect harmony with their surroundings. An expert has a tempo or rhythm that is indicated by the right speed for his/her steps, the right tempo for his/her arms to swing as he walks.
An expert is a good judge and a kind provider.
