Look at the embusen line of fighting vs. defense as being a singular line that floats in front of each person in a conflict. This particular embusen line is one of transition in a fight. The line denotes when one has transitioned from a defense model into the illegal fighting model. Imagine a line that resides in your mind and it is a line you don't wish to cross when in a violent situation.
If you cross the line then you have to have the knowledge, ability and willingness to go the distance by your ability to tell your story in a form that will promote your defense model and dissuade others from entering the fighting illegal model. In other words, "get out of jail free card" vs. "go to jail, go directly to jail and do not pass go."
The more you know about that psychological line the greater your ability to cross it or not cross it and depending on that line how you communicate it when the need arises - when to cops ask you about it; when the prosecutor asks you about it; when you go get your "self-defense/force expert" attorney and he or she asks you to explain it and so on.
