Is it "budo" or is it Memorex?

SueC of "My journey to black belt" blog has a wonderful article/post on the next Olympics and inclusion of budo or karate, good read here:

Ergo, the title today. Do you remember the old ads about is it live or is it Memorex? I do, cause I are old enough hehehe, but what I am trying to say here is that many argue the point of being a budo oriented system but in reality they are actually living under a false pretense that they don't even realize simply because it was what they were taught.

I am a Marine, inactive at this time, and I always assumed that what I practiced and trained was combative/defensive but found out after many years to be not exactly true. There are aspects to the application of my system that are defensive in nature and mostly due to the training received as a Marine could be used in a combative mode but with reservations. Win or lose in a fight or combative situation it was more the application of the system boosted by my training as a Marine .... not exclusively my martial art system.

Granted, my system was a bit closer to budo but it was still influenced by many factors that were more sport or educational institutionalized oriented training models. I have since moved it as much as possible closer to budo/defense oriented but due to history have to remain self-examining toward what I do and practice. I believe now due to the ambiguities of what people perceive vs. reality that this self-analysis must remain a diligently ongoing effort.

I stated in a comment to Sue's post that most American's may believe they practice budo but in reality most practice "sport." It is my view, my perceptions and my beliefs which will always be open to discussion and self-analysis toward changes that are closer to the truth.

Is it budo or is it memorex?
