Consider kamae as a position and take the direct inference to stances
out of the picture. Kamae can be any position taken be it a stance or
the position of a waza. You might assume a hand kamae for a strike, a
punch or a thrust where the hand, arm and upper body assume a momentary
position or body kamae, hand kamae and arm kamae that applies a specific
waza to a specific attack, etc.
Taking the term stance out of the definition and explanation of "kamae" lends more to its purpose then simply assuming a stance. It should and does take in the whole of the body as to a transitory positioning, kamae, that is particular to the present moment application.
