Principle of Okinawa Karate Do

"To learn from everyone, but to take what they learn and transform it to suit their own strong character." - Way of the Warrior: Karate, Way of the Empty Hand [4/4] at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev3hwvphOAI&feature=related (3:40 on clip)

When you view these clips the commentator makes reference to the principle and when you study the history, culture and customs of this island of Karate it becomes a theme throughout all aspects of life for its peoples. This, to me, makes them who they are and makes them model examples of how to live life.

Today's American karate seems stuck in the dogma of adherence to how it was with out deviation. I have written on this before and want to repeat it here along with the quote because if our system were meant to remain in the past then those who created, fostered and passed on to us this eclectic system of self-improvement, self-introspective and self-confident would not have or live by this basic principle of Okinawan Karate Do.

I would add only that one should remain steadfast on one system, not style, and make all the others a matter of learning for familiarity so they can add or leave out those things they feel should be added to their already strong character, custom and way of the empty hand.
