Repetition - a key ....

Recently I posted on repetition. I also provided that posting to the Isshinryu Forum where one of the forum members provided a response where the following quote was provided:

" I find it helpful to prepare mentally before hand and remind myself of what I want to focus on before I start the repetitions." - Ray Read, Florida Isshinryu and Webmaster for "Isshinryu Forum." http://www.isshinryuforum.com/

I immediately liked the quote. It is the "key" to how one might overcome the monotony of repetitive practice. It is also a statement that one might repeat before all practice and training.

How many actually step on to the dojo training floor proper with absolutely no preparation as to what they will focus on in the session? How many just "follow along" with others as they "walk-thru" the session?

I believe that we always enter into life activities with some plan, some process or some syllabus to guide our efforts. If we enter into life without one and the knowledge that goes with it and is acquired by participation in it then are we not being of disservice to our self and our efforts and our growth?

Even if it is a moment before you step out the front door for the day where you just tell yourself, "I will open my awareness to my environment and listen to my instincts, that little voice saying 'danger will robenson, danger,' so I can avoid it." It can be anything but it should be there, it should be process to prepare mentally. All to often in violent situations the surprise and suddenness of an attack is due to a lack of a process to remain aware. Why not create that mental process where you prepare mentally before you are caught in a situation not to friendly to you.

So, the best practice you can achieve in this is to always mentally prepare beforehand and a constant "repetitive" reminder to yourself as to what you should focus on in the dojo and maybe in every day life.
