Practice According to Anko Itosu Sensei by Kowankan Blogger

Mario McKenna Sensei's blog, Kowakan, has a nice piece of advice apparently written by Anko Itosu Sensei on practicing. Click the link and read his blog and this particular advice cause it, to me and my personal view, is true, oh so true. Once done then come here and read my redaction of the same quotes as I have taken liberties to correct some small parts I felt needed clarification cause the parts were not as accurate as to explanations as I would like.

"It goes without saying that if you want to improve your karate then you must practice consistently. What I mean by practice is not practice in the dojo, but practice outside the dojo. If you do not practice outside of the dojo you will not make any real progress. It’s that simple. You simply cannot build the mental focus or perform the number repetitions that build neural networks the control the muscle response by only practicing twice or three times a week.

You need to consider the length of practice. In my opinion, don’t bother with practices less than 1 hour. When I see a teacher doing that, I think s/he should change the name from dojo to fitness club. Why the big deal about time? Simple, the mind, those neural networks/pathways, cannot be settled deeply, embedded, into practice in less than an hour and therefore no insight or discoveries are made. If you think it’s just my opinion, think again. It was Anko Itosu who said that you needed to practice daily for at least an hour or two."
