The theory is to apply this to martial arts so when confronted in a physical conflict or combat the practitioners achieves this state so that the minds monkey brain will not cause the type of distractions that would hinder not losing or something like this so this is also what folks today call, "being present or in the moment."
I believe that to allow the lizard to achieve what we all practice hard and diligently to accomplish the mind must be as placid as possible keeping the emotions in check and the thought processes totally and completely on the present moment. Allowing monkey chatter to take the mind to the past or future is a distraction and keeps the present moment mind from acting appropriately.
This is not just something we use for martial purposes for it also works well in every day life where our monkey chatter distracts us from the more important things in life. You will also find that the ken-po goku-i speaks of body and mind where we "see" in the present moment in all directions keeping the mind focused and aware of the "now."
Where else can any one person receive the type of feedback necessary to train the mind for no-mind, present moment stability, being in the now and pushing those monkey chattering of past and future out of the present then in karate or any martial system where a distraction, at the very least, is announced when you get hit or fail to act in a stress induced situation for practice, etc.?
Think of it this way, the body is "always" in the now, the present moment, and it does not deviate one smidgeon into the future or past. If it could wouldn't that be a great self defense, your confronted so your body simply moves into some future instance thus avoiding the exchange. Cool, huh, but not realistic.
The mind is the only human non-physical manifestation that has the innate ability to go out of the now, often, and go to the past or future, in the mind. Our monkey brains then use that to take us for a roller coaster ride where the monkey runs the show willy nilly while your present moment mind and body suffer the consequences.
Practicing present moment awareness shackles the monkey and lets your present moment mind focus on events in real time leaving all the Matrix Time for the movies.
We then learn to control our present moment, now, and only utilize past to handle immediate issues requiring the information for decision making only. As to the future, that is not written and is in constant flux so all the monkey chatter on how the future might or might not come to pass is fruitless and a total waste of energy and mind time. All of it distracts and removes us from the now which is the only time we have. Past is past, gone while the future has not arrived to the now so it means not one thing worth worry and concern.
The body remains present so in lieu of the body following the mind, in this instance, the mind should be trained to follow the bodies lead by remaining present, in the now. The now mind then can lead the body in the present moment handling stimuli in real time. Training and practice then simply provide the mind and body with the tools to handle the present moment.
